Saved By the Bed

Yesterday, I washed our bedspread. It wasn't dry by midnight so I scoured the house for a temporary replacement.

This is apparently Dan's comforter from middle school, which he brought to Iowa because...? Now I'm wondering if there's a collection of Treasure Trolls in the hall closet. Or maybe a hamburger phone.

Dan swears this comforter is an exact replica of the one Zack Morris had on Saved By the Bell. I wasted spent a solid hour watching YouTube tribute videos trying to spot Zack's room. I learned that not a lot of scenes take place in Zack's room. However, in one particularly moving homage to Kelly and Zack's relationship, set to Dido's "White Flag," it appears that his bedspread is just a very plain, very unsquiggly blue. Maybe to avoid overpowering the curtains?

Dan said duh, he wasn't talking about Zack's bedspread in the first two seasons. I asked him how many bedspreads did Zack Morris have, and why do you remember them? Dan said maybe four. OK smarty, but how many George Michael posters did he have?

(That may or may not be Kelly's room.)

I can't find our bedspread in any episodes. In SBTB the College Years, when Zack wasn't buying up more posters at the Cal-U quad sale, he apparently slept on a bunk bed under a polar fleece.

Here's a still of Zack throwing Kelly onto one of those other "latter season" bedspreads. Given the way her hair is whiping against her face to form a beard, and her frenzied propulsion towards the American flag, I like to imagine Zack is fighting off a terrorist.

Maybe Dan is just confusing his own coming-of-age bedspread with the colorful geometric partitions in The Max.

So, basically, I don't believe my boyfriend. But I did find proof that Kelly was clutching my childhood teddy bear.

Can anybody out there corroborate Dan's story?

  4. I just realized something. I think that could have been Zack's bedspread in the early years of Saved By the Bell in the episodes with Hayley Mills! The show was originally called Good Morning Miss Bliss and then changed to SBTB for syndication.

  6. I had that bedspread as a shirt in 7th grade. What you people fail to understand is that nothing in the Northeast in the 1980's was even remotely fashionable. Select pockets of uncoolness carried on this silent war against ironic detachment well into the 90's. One of those pockets was apparently centered over Dan's childhood bedroom.

  7. Nooo...I thought "Saved by the Bell" the second I saw the picture too, before I even read the rest of your post. The memory works in mysterious ways- it's the exact same lines and squiggles as in the opening credits of Saved By The Bell (youtube the intro), as well as in the decor at The Max. If anyone finds proof that that was Zack's bedspread I will be SCHOCKED. I think it's just mind trickery... Sorry, Dan.

  8. This was not Zack's comforter...Miggity is right and its the same squiggles and triangles from the opening credits in the early years of the show...Zack's comforter was a grayish color with different colored diamonds on it. I still watch this show every morning.
